It is well-known that cracks are important in engineering because they sometimes lead to failures of structures. Indeed, ``fracture mechanics'' is synonymous with the mechanics of cracks. To investigate phenomena related to fractures precisely three-dimensional analyses of crack problems are indispensable. However, three-dimensional analyses will inevitably become large-scale. Hence, we attempt to apply FM-BIEM to large-scale crack problems. In this section we formulate crack problems and derive the corresponding integral equations, taking the elastostatics case as an example.
